Are longtail keywords beneficial for SEO work?

Not very long ago, longtail keywords were the darlings of most webmasters. It was an accepted practice to gain traffic for websites through longtail keywords that were used in SEO content. There wasn’t much competition and things were pretty smooth for SEO specialists, webmasters, blog owners and website owners as well. Once the competition started heating up and reached its peak, the shorter keywords slowly started losing their charm and the focus was on longtail keywords. Today, longtail keywords have been established and are accepted as a norm, provided they are used judiciously and liked by the various popular search engines.

What are longtail keywords, anyway? The first noticeable quality about a longtail keyword is that it contains at least 4 to 5 words. Though they appear to be more complex than regular keywords, they are descriptive and hit the required target faster. It is obvious that Google no longer wants to be just a platform that provides links for searches, it wants to a step further and become the source by itself. This is one of the reasons why longtail keywords are making a comeback, which is good news for the SEO community, bloggers, and blog owners alike.

In this current scenario, SEOs have an important to play and work in tandem with search engines like Google, where the benefit is mutual. You need to work out the actual intentions of the users and try to provide solutions that reach them faster. In other words you need to start thinking like a user yourself and work out how a person will go about searching for a particular type of information. This is where a group of keywords or longtail keywords will help better than the regular keywords. The regular keywords are bound to throw up multiple results, most of which will turn out to be wild-goose chases.

It is a fact that longtail keywords may contain the particular keyword that interests the user, and draw more people to your website. Longtail keywords have better reach and will filter down to more search results, which may not be possible with shorter keywords (mostly one-word keywords). The ongoing trend is that the longtail keywords themselves are growing longer with words being added now and then. This is because of research results that show the need to make longtail keywords longer. However, there are only a certain number of words even the longest longtail keyword can have.

SEOs have Google to thank for the resurgence of longtail keywords, which at one point of time were almost fading away from the scene. The changing algorithms at Google are responsible for the new lease of life that the longtail keywords have received, and it is up to the SEOs to make good use of this opportunity that has come their way one more time. Longtail keywords have proved that the conversion rate is better, which is more important than page ranking, which most websites are craving for.  Using longtail keywords in your content will help maintain a lasting web presence, which is the key to increased traffic diversion.
