Google and the Attribution of Content Authors with the Microformat rel = “author”

Google announced on June 7 that they have started to index the ‘ attribution of content related to the authors , not only to websites on which they are present.

The links associated with the author of a page can now have the code rel = “author” and Google will understand that the name is linked against the author of the linked page. This is a significant change in the balance between authority sites and authors who create the content for them.

google authorship

For example, in this link you can see my name Enrico Ferretti linked with the rel = “author” in the HTML. This allows Google to show regardless of its content an author in search results.

Google has worked with a group of major publishers to achieve technically this small change and the markup is now automatically included in all content posted on Blogger and Youtube .

Google says that this microformat is used in addition to the XFN rel = “me” standard and the new and controversial system of Schema.org microdata .

As written by Google engineer Othar Hansson concluding the announcement, ” We know that the valid content comes from authors valid , and we are looking carefully the methods so that this markup help us to emphasize the authors and position in the organic search results . ”

The widespread adoption of the rel = “author” of a web of data made accessible to all could create a wide variety of other possibilities. There is no reason to believe that Google will be the only one to use this structured markup. What has been created in a manner accessible by programs, and standardized public can be measured, monitored, optimized, and much more.

Now the work, and the success of particular authors will be traceable through websites and online publishing platforms.

Considerations

Are many future scenarios that may become a reality as a result of this implementation. For example, imagine you are a famous author, who has published over time, a vast amount of quality content , maybe in the future google could give the author a kind of AuthorRank . This value could then be passed with the rel = “author” to all the new content and links published by the author, who then would enjoy the benefits of his town.

This could reshuffle the logical SEO and it would be just one of the many things possible with an instrument of “authorship”, ie verification of the author of a post.

For example, the rel author would also be useful to prevent duplicate content , a situation that occurs very often and sees Google still unable to determine with certainty who the real author of a post , as he explains in this video that Matt Kutts found below.
